Aligarh: The Disability Unit OF Aligarh Muslim University, marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, at the Assembly Hall, University Polytechnic.
The awareness program was attended by over 250 students and volunteers, and aimed at promoting the welfare of students with disabilities and raising awareness about their socio-political and economic inclusion.
Chief Guest Prof Rafiuddin emphasized the need for enhanced facilities and greater inclusion of students with disabilities in campus life, assuring his commitment to addressing their concerns. Guest of Honour Dr Murad Ahmad Khan highlighted the importance of ensuring accessibility to infrastructure for PwD students and pledged his support for their welfare.
During the event, Prof Rafiuddin and Dr Murad Ahmad Khan distributed assistive devices, including wheelchairs, tricycles, smart sticks, hearing aids, recorders, headphones, and pen drives, to over 200 PwD students. The distribution was facilitated by Dr Fazila Shahnawaz, Dr Shagufta Niyaz, and Dr Waseem Raza.
Prof Manvendra Kumar Pundhir, Coordinator of the Disability Unit, presented a report highlighting the unit's achievements, including the modification of the reservation roster, formation of an equal opportunity policy, implementation of accessibility guidelines, and resolution of grievances.
Dr Fazila Shahnawaz, Deputy Coordinator, welcomed the guests and PwD students. Student volunteer Madhiya Nihar conducted the program, and Dr Shagufta Niyaz delivered a vote of thanks.
Over 50 volunteers contributed to the event's success, with significant support from Dr Khalid Ahmad and the Disability Unit staff, including Hilal Khurshid, Mohd Bilal, and Mohd Shahnawaz.
The event highlighted AMU’s commitment to promoting an inclusive environment for students with disabilities.
