Chronic Kidney Diseases' problem increasing at alarming rate

Aligarh: Prof Mohd Aslam from the Nephrology Section at the Department of Medicine in JN Medical College of Aligarh Muslim University highlighted the problem of chronic kidney disease and kidney stones which are prevalent in the Indian subcontinent and increasing at an alarming rate.

Delivering a lecture at the 36th conference of the International Society for Fluoride Research, held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, Aslam said that in 25-30 per cent of patients, the cause of the disease is not found and in this subset of patients, heavy metals including a high level of fluoride in drinking water and food chain are identified as the causative agent.

“Research on animal models has proved that these agents cause changes in kidneys and lead to renal failure and other kidney diseases including stones. These observations of such patients show that most of these patients belonged to Aligarh district and they worked in lock factories”, he added.

Prof Anjum Parvez, Chairman, the Department of Medicine, congratulated Prof Aslam for presenting his work at an international forum and highlighting the emerging role of heavy metals and fluoride as causative factors in kidney diseases.
