Aligarh: The Women’s College at Aligarh Muslim University, hosted Sheikh Mohd Abdullah Memorial Women's Regional Basketball and A'ala Bi Memorial Women's Regional Volleyball tournaments, bringing together 21 teams from across Aligarh. The spirited event concluded with a grand closing ceremony, celebrating athletic excellence and sportsmanship.
The Volleyball tournament saw fierce competition, with the AMU team clinching the Championship by defeating the Women’s College team. Meanwhile, the Women’s College team triumphed in the Basketball Championship, with the Hathras team securing the runner-up position.
In the closing ceremony, the chief guest Ameer Ali Zaidi, an international Table Tennis player and retired Deputy Director of Sports, motivated the participating students, urging them not to feel disheartened if they did not win. He emphasized that participation itself is a valuable learning experience that will contribute to their growth and future success.
The guest of honour Dr Razia B Rizvi, Retired Deputy Director of Sports at Women's College, praised the exceptional performances of all the teams and encouraged students to continue striving for excellence in sports.
Apart from the Women’s College team, the event featured participation from several district teams, including Heritage International School, AMU Girls' School, and ABK High School, among others.
Earlier, in his inaugural address, the chief guest, AMU Registrar, Mohd Imran emphasized the significance of physical training and recalled the contributions of various AMU alumni in the field of sports. He lauded the pivotal role of Women’s College in shaping the lives of young women, stating that the institution has not only educated but also empowered women.
Imran congratulated all participants and commended the efforts of Prof Masud Anwar Alvi, Principal of Women’s College, and appreciated Dr Naziya Khan for her hard work in successfully organizing the tournament.
The event witnessed the presence of esteemed university officials, including Prof Brij Bhushan Singh, Prof Syed Amjad Ali Rizvi, Prof Masud Anwar Alavi, Dr Jameel Ahmed, Prof Imrana Naseem, and Prof Shaukat Haseen.
Mehwash Khan, Games Supervisor, Abdullah Hall, played a crucial role in organizing the event. Ansharah Kaiyoom and Kaaminah Beg conducted the programme, while Dr Naziya Khan extended a vote of thanks.
