Enhancing Agra Metro's role in cultural heritage promotion

Agra: The extensive Agra Metro rail network is promoting local arts and culture alongside providing travel comforts to tourists. The first phase of the metro, stretching six kilometres from the Taj Mahal's eastern gate to the Agra Fort, is becoming increasingly popular with rising footfalls. Officials anticipate a significant boost in Metro travel during the upcoming tourist season, which begins on September 27, World Tourism Day.

Metro stations are being utilized for cultural promotions through singing and dancing activities. To further integrate local culture with metro travel, city culture activists have presented a blueprint to the officials.

A proposal has been submitted to UP Metro Agra to integrate heritage and culture into the 29.06 km Agra Metro system. The 'Poetry in Motion' initiative aims to connect locals and tourists to Agra's literary and cultural richness.

A delegation from Amrit Vidya Education for Immortality, led by General Secretary Anil Sharma, met with UP Metro Agra's Assistant Manager, Gauri Shukla, to discuss the plans. Shukla emphasized Agra's historical significance as a hub for poets, writers, and intellectuals, highlighting the potential to use the Metro as a platform to promote the city's literary and cultural legacy.

During the discussions, internationally renowned English poet Rajeev Khandelwal highlighted the success of 'Poetry in Motion' initiatives in major metro systems worldwide. He noted that such programs enhance the travel experience and provide opportunities for mental relaxation. Khandelwal advocated for similar initiatives in Agra Metro, where travellers could learn about local literary figures during their journey.

Eminent poets such as Surdas, Mirza Ghalib, and Nazir were specifically mentioned in the context of Agra's rich literary tradition. The delegation members explained that Agra has been a hub for Persian and Urdu poetry, especially during the Mughal era. Notable poets such as Mirza Ghalib and Meer Taqi Meer have connections to Agra. Agra also played a role in the Bhakti movement, with poets like Surdas and Tulsidas contributing significantly to Hindi literature. During and after the British colonial period, Agra remained a centre for literary activities, contributing to modern Hindi and Urdu literature.

Additionally, Agra is home to the Agra Gharana, known for its distinct style of Hindustani classical music. The city hosts various cultural festivals like the Taj Mahotsav, celebrating its rich heritage. Agra has contributed to the Indian film industry, with its theatres and cultural institutions regularly hosting performances. Modern Agra has several literary societies and hosts events such as poetry readings and book launches.

The delegation members visited Metro stations such as Taj East Gate, Basai, Fatehabad, Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Mankameshwar to identify suitable locations for displaying pictures, poems, and paintings of literary figures.

Shukla mentioned that the UP Metro Agra network, in two phases, provides opportunities for various activities, including birthdays, student visits, and cultural performances, at metro stations. Kavi sammelans and cultural presentations have also been held at metro stations. UP Metro Agra aims to provide convenient parking at metro stations and has installed ROs for drinking water. Rainwater harvesting systems are also in place at all stations. Since its launch, Agra Metro has become a reliable public transport option. Operational stations include Taj East Gate, Basai, Fatehabad Road, Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Mankameshwar. Footfall is increasing, and many travellers and guides have recommended the Agra Metro to tourists.
