Aligarh: The National Science Day-2023 was observed by the Department of Physics at AMU to commemorate the invention of the “Raman Effect'', by Indian Physicist Sir CV Raman for which he earned the Nobel Prize. Sir CV Raman has a connection with AMU as he was conferred D.Sc.( honoris causa) degree by the university on 20th November 1931.

In his Presidential remark the Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor mentioned the significance of National Science Day and appreciated the Department for achieving higher academic excellence with each passing year. Talking about ‘Global Science for Global Wellbeing’, he wished the staff and students with more laurels in their future endeavours”.

Quoting Stephen Hawking, he said “Science is not only a discipline of reason but also one of romance and passion’’. We all have to do more so that all challenges could be overcome through scientific and technological advances, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest, Prof Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, Visiting Professor at IIT Delhi and former Vice Chancellor Hyderabad University, said not only National Science Day, which is celebrated on 28th February each year rather every day is a science day. He also mentioned that Sir CV Raman had the quality to recognize the values of other people. In the noon session, Prof Ramaswamy delivered a talk on the topic “The growth of Complexity Science”.

The Guest of Honour, Prof SK Singh, Former Vice Chancellor of HNB Garhwal University, discussed the important points regarding the Nobel Prize with Sir CV Raman. He pointed out that we should also remember other Indian Physicists on the occasion of National Science Day. He emphasized AMU is equipped with the best infrastructure and can take lead in the field of Science communication and content creation.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof M Ashraf, emphasized the importance of celebrations and wished the department more growth in the years to come. He also encouraged the students to develop an interest in Science and explore the mysteries of the Universe.

Prof M Sajjad Athar, Chairperson, Department of Physics, in his welcome address, presented an overview of all the activities organized by the department and its achievements. He also gave a detailed description of the department and important initiatives taken recently by the department.

The Physics Bulletin-2023 featuring quality articles was released by the Vice-Chancellor, on the occasion. An Annual Report-2022 was also released during the programme which contains achievements and activities carried out by the Physics Department.

On the occasion, awards and certificates were given to the students for their poster presentation. The prizes and certificates for Best Poster presentation by UG/PG students were presented by the Guest of Honour, Prof SK Sing.

The Students who won the prizes are First Prize to Somayya Tariq and Ismat Jameel; Second Prize to Pavika Maheshwari, Third Prize to Mohd. Raza and Prashant Kumar

The prize and certificates for Best Poster presentation by Research Scholars were given by Chief Guest, Prof. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy where First Prize was given to Vaniya Ansari; Second Prize to Akash Kumar and the third Prize to Mehroosh Fatema.

Dr Jai Prakash, the Convener, conducted the proceedings and presented the vote of thanks.
