Research scholars and students remember Fredric Jameson

Aligarh: A group of research scholars and students at the Department of English at Aligarh Muslim University held a commemorative meeting, followed by a reading session, honoring one of the influential cultural critics and theorists, Fredric Jameson, who is known for his profound insights into postmodernism and the political dimensions of culture.

Fredric Jameson was an American literary critic, philosopher, and Marxist political theorist, who passed away on September 22, in Durham North Carolina.

The participating students and research scholars engaged in a reading activity, discussing Jameson’s selected works and paying rich tributes to him for his distinctive literary and philosophical acumen.

The students, including Saim Raza, Tiyasa Dey, and Mrinalini Singh read from Jameson’s work and discussed his essay, ‘The Politics of Theory: Ideological positions in the Post-Modern debate’, exploring its relevance in today’s socio-political landscape. The essay sparked thoughtful dialogue on the intersections of culture, architecture, music, and literary studies.

The reading from Jameson’s work preceded a short talk by Prof Mohd Asim Siddiqui on Jameson’s contribution to critical theory, especially his take on structuralist debates on language and the relationship between postmodernism and capitalism.

His works, including ‘Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism’, have left an indelible mark on literary and cultural studies, inspiring generations of scholars and students, he added.
