Exploring Rationalism in Indo-Persian Thought at AMU

Aligarh: On the occasion of World Philosophy Day, the Department of Philosophy at Aligarh Muslim University, organized a Special Lecture on ‘Rationalism in Indo-Persian Thought’. The event was held on 21st November at the Faculty of Arts Lounge.

The highlight of the event was a Special Lecture by Prof Irfan Habib, Professor Emeritus at AMU's Centre for Advanced Study in the Department of History.

Padma Bhushan awardee, Prof Habib explored the deep-rooted traditions of rationalism in medieval India. He began by discussing Al-Biruni's Kitab al-Hind, which showcased a rational and unbiased approach to understanding Indian philosophy and culture. Prof Habib noted Al-Biruni’s objective analysis, devoid of religious influence, underscoring his commitment to reason over faith.

Continuing his exploration of rationalism, Prof Habib discussed the intellectual atmosphere of Emperor Akbar’s court, focusing on Abul Fazl's works. In Ain-i-Akbari, Abul Fazl promoted reason as the guiding force in governance, advocating for sovereign laws that transcend religious origins. Prof Habib linked these ideas to Akbar’s vision of a pluralistic and secular state, highlighting the enduring relevance of these concepts. He also touched on Persian poetry’s role in critiquing orthodoxy, citing figures like Urfi who challenged both Islamic and non-Islamic dogmas through their verse.

Prof Habib concluded by reflecting on the ethical dimensions of rationalism, as seen in texts like Dabistan. He emphasized the ideals of equality, tolerance, and compassion.

Prof Aquil Ahmad, Chairperson, the Department of Philosophy, highlighted the significance of World Philosophy Day and emphasized its importance in promoting critical thinking and intellectual dialogue, pointing out the contributions of influential figures such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

Prof Habib and Prof Arif Nazir, Dean, Faculty of Arts, awarded certificates to the winners of a ‘Paper Presentation Competition’ on the theme ‘Philosophy: Bridging Social Gaps’. Yanis Iqbal won 1st Position, Ahana Singh secured 2nd, and Preeti Yadav took 3rd.

The event concluded with releasing the latest issue of the ‘Aligarh Journal of Islamic Philosophy’, formally launched by distinguished guests, including the Chairperson and Dr Aamir Riyaz, Executive Editor. Prof Arif Nazir delivered the concluding remarks, emphasizing the continued relevance of Indo-Persian rationalist traditions. Zaid Ahmad Siddiqui moderated the program, while Dr Shahidul Hoque organized the event and delivered the vote of thanks.
