Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University recently celebrated the legacy of the esteemed Urdu poet, Mir Taqi Mir, with the release of a special volume of essays. This collection, titled Teen Sau Sala Jashne-e-Mir, was unveiled by the university's Vice Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon, honouring Mir’s profound influence on Urdu literature.
Mir Taqi Mir, often referred to as the 'God of Poetry' in Urdu literature, has left an indelible mark through his poignant and emotive verses. His contributions to the literary world were commemorated through this volume, which has been meticulously edited by Prof Mohammad Ali Jauhar and Dr Sarwar Sajid. The essays in this collection were initially published during Mir’s tercentennial celebrations and offer a comprehensive critical evaluation of his work, underscoring the timelessness and brilliance of his poetry.
It may be mentioned here that Mirza Ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir and Nazir Akbarabadi are the three pillars of Urdu adab, according to connoisseurs of poetry.
The event also saw the release of three other significant works. Prof Khatoon presented Latifuddin Ahmad: Hayat aur Karnamey by Dr M Iqbal Zargar, a detailed biography and critical study of Latifuddin Ahmad's life and achievements. Another notable book, Mumtaz Husain ki Ilmi wa Adabi Khidmaat by Dr. Nazia Sumbul, explores the scholarly and literary contributions of Mumtaz Husain. Additionally, Chaak Par Jalta Chirag, a life sketch co-authored by Dr Aftab Alam Najmi and Ghazala Tahseen, was also introduced to the audience.
In her address, Prof Naima Khatoon emphasized the inclusive nature of Urdu, describing it as a language that transcends social classes and belongs to the common people. She praised the authors and editors for their diligent efforts in producing such well-edited volumes and extended special congratulations to the research scholars whose articles enrich the Teen Sau Sala Jashne-e-Mir collection.
Prof Mohammad Ali Jauhar, former Chairperson of the Department of Urdu, also spoke at the event, elaborating on the significance of ‘Jashn-e-Mir’ and the importance of the collected essays in preserving and promoting Mir Taqi Mir's literary heritage. The ceremony was a testament to the enduring legacy of Mir, reaffirming his place as a pillar of Urdu literature.
