Aligarh: Awareness on preventive behaviours, risk factors and how to live with kidney diseases was raised in the health camp and symposium of the Departments of Medicine and Paediatrics, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University. The two-day programme was a part of the World Kidney Day observations.

Prof Anjum Parvez, Chairman, Department of Medicine, and Prof Kamran Afzal, Chairman, Department of Paediatrics, said: “A total of 220 patients, including adults and children, were screened in the health camp at the Urban Health Training Centre. The camp was held in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine”.

“Kidneys can be protected by managing health conditions that cause kidney damage, such as diabetes and high blood pressure”, said Prof Saira Mehnaz.

Dr Suboohi Afzal urged patients attending the camp to make healthy food choices, engage in physical activity, aim for a healthy weight, sleep for 7 to 8 hours daily, quit smoking and live a stress-free life.

Dr Mohd Aslam and Dr Saif Quaiser spoke on kidney disease symptoms, methods of diagnosis and treatment procedures.

Dr Ali Jafar Abdi conducted the awareness deliberations in the health camp.

Diploma in Dialysis and nursing students also participated in quiz and poster contests. 

At the Symposium to mark the Kidney Day at JNMC, Prof Kamran Afzal and Dr Arun Kumar of Department of Nephrology, AIIMS, New Delhi, deliberated causes and treatments of chronic kidney diseases, kidney stones, Glomerulonephritis, Polycystic kidney diseases and urinary tract infections among others.

Faculty members, resident doctors, nursing staff, students and technical staff also participated in an awareness walk from the Dialysis Unit, Department of Medicine to the Centenary Gate.

Prof Anjum Parvez was the organising chairman of the programme with Prof Kamran Afzal as the co-organising Chairman. Dr Mohd Aslam and Dr Saif Quaiser were the respective organising and co-organising secretaries.
