Lecture held on intriguing world of alkaline rocks



Aligarh: The Department of Geology at Aligarh Muslim University organised two popular talks by Prof NV Chalapathi Rao, Director of the National Centre for Earth Science Studies, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India.

In the first lecture, Prof Chalapathi Rao delved into the intriguing world of alkaline rocks, discussing their unique mineralogical and geochemical characteristics. He described the importance of these rocks in understanding Earth's mantle processes and geodynamic evolution.

Prof Rao provided a comprehensive overview of alkaline magmatism, its association with continental rifting, mantle plume activities and its economic significance in hosting rare earth elements and other critical minerals.

The second talk addressed critical aspects of academic research and publication.

Prof Chalapathi Rao provided valuable insights into the importance of publishing in high-quality journals, understanding impact factors and maintaining ethical standards in research and citations.

Rao’s emphasis on research integrity, proper attribution, and avoiding predatory publishing resonated with the audience, especially the research scholars and young faculty members.

Prof Rashid Umar, Chairperson, Department of Geology and Prof Kr Farahim Khan welcomed Prof Chalapathi Rao and introduced him to the audience.

As a token of appreciation, the Department of Geology presented a memento to Prof Chalapathi Rao.

Prof MEA Mondal conducted the event and highlighted Prof Chalapathi Rao’s vast contributions to the subject of geology in general and petrology in particular.

Prof Rashid Umar, Chairperson, Department of Geology said this successful event underscores the Department’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and intellectual growth through engagements with leading experts in the field.
