Heavy Ion Fusion Cross-sections explained

Aligarh: Prof. BP Singh, Department of Physics at Aligarh Muslim University, delivered a talk on "Heavy Ion Fusion Cross-sections: Understanding Fusion Hindrance from Astrophysical S-Factor" at the “Meghnad Saha Memorial International Conference on Frontiers of Physics", organized by the Department of Physics, University of Allahabad at Prayagraj, in association with the National Academy of Sciences, India. He also chaired a technical session at the conference.

Prof Singh delved into the intricate dynamics of nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions and their pivotal role in unraveling cosmic mysteries. He discussed the utilization of stacked foil activation techniques and the precise identification of fusion residues through characteristic gamma radiations to determine fusion cross-sections.

Highlighting the fascinating phenomena observed in heavy ion-induced reactions, Prof. Singh elucidated the fusion hindrance phenomenon, explaining the rapid decrease in fusion cross-sections, and providing critical insights into the boundaries where fusion hindrance becomes evident.
